At first I was like…. wha???

by Nathan on April 23, 2010

I’m a traditional interiors guy, still mourning the loss of Southern Accents. I will never get over it. But I harbor a love of mid-century modern furniture design. To this day, the greatest present I ever hope to receive is the Eames Lounge chair and ottoman. It will be put in a prominent place in my home – I don’t think it would ever look out of place no matter how traditional my interiors.

Eames Lounge Chair

Dear Santa...

Following Rachel’s comment on NYC must sees (and after drooling over the sale pages each morning in my New York Times) Richard and I headed crosstown (after a yummy Pastis brunch) to ABC Carpet and Home. Six floors of NYC interior fun. Whee.

Heading from floor five to floor six – what did I spot? The unmistakable profile of an Eames lounge chair. But something was amiss… I couldn’t quite put my finger on it…

OMG!

I said to Richard, “that is a sacrilege” and snapped a photo with the iPhone. But now that we’re home and I’m looking at it, I’m kind of loving it. What do you think?

P.S. The chair was floating in what I can only refer to as the ‘Susani’ corner of the store.

There's a whole lotta susanni going on up in here.

oh darn, I didn’t even think to mention the ABC Home store! I actually really like it (I’m such a color/pattern girl).

I would love to go to that store! I think I would find lots of ‘Dear Santas…’ And I’m a plain Jane kind of girl so although I can appreciate the colorful fabric, I think it would give me (personally), a panic attack. I do hope to be much braver some day!!! And I tell myself that when I win the lottery (or when Santa is really good to me), I’ll have many homes and each will have a different look – so perhaps the happy chair would fit in my ‘worldly’ house in Peru. Happy weekend, Trina

Oh. Perhaps distance makes the heart grow fonder. I prefer the leather version but I can see myself toying with buying that to shock my hard core MCM friends.

Thanks for the kind words about Southern Accents. As a former staffer, I miss it too. As for the chair, I think the novelty of the fabric would wear off once it came out of the Suzani corner and into my home.

bahahaha, I suppose I am a traditionalist/purist myself, as I don’t “get” this at all. To me the only way they are done well is the way Southern Accents printed one circa 2004-ish, draped casually at then end of the bed. Remember? It was pink and fabulous and the room was upholstered in ticking fabric. I’ll send you a pic.
