A Short Walk in the New Orleans Garden District

by laurelstreet on September 20, 2009

A very short walk indeed – there’s so much more to this neighborhood. I covered stretches of only three streets, Philip Street through Second Street, between Magazine Street and St. Charles Avenue – approximately fifteen blocks total. Yet I managed to lose two hours there daydreaming about architectural detail. Here are some finds:

Have a seat. Mimosa anyone?

I cannot tell you how much I love this house: Center Hall, Oak Trees, Hanging Baskets of Flowers... a gem.

These were once used to hitch up your horse when visiting. Horses have been replaced with Mercedes in the neighborhood recently.

Love the detail on the porch roof here (see thought the lovely ornamental gate). This house belongs to the fountain I showed you up top.

I love the painted detail on the porch ceiling here (see though the ornamental gate). This house belongs to the fountain I showed you up top. Actually, this may be one of my favorite shots from the morning's walk.

I just think this is a very inviting entrance. I also admire house the house steps back from the street, one, two, three...

This little detail tickled me. Somebody has to trim that thing with some regularity. Cute.

Oak Trees line each block. Lovely, except in Spring when fuzzy stinging caterpillars just fall right out of them on your head. Ow!

And home is only a streetcar ride away, down St. Charles Avenue.

Any time you want to take your camera with you on a walk please do – we’ll all benefit. Just gorgeous images, & yes the house in image #3 is sceamingly beeeoootiful. The Aussie $ is close to parity with the US $, so MOTH’s promise to book the tickets when it reaches 1:1 will need to be kept. See you soon!
